The surname Giunta and its variants is found throughout Italy although the form Giunta is mainly associated with the south particularly with Calabria and the island of Sicily. Giacomo Giunta was ambassador to Garanto in 1470 and Alfonso Giunta was created Duke of Calabria. The name Giunta is itself derived from the italian phrase "bonagiunta", meaning literally "good or safe arrival" and by association referred to the expected arrival of a child.
